Thomas Soares Mullen is a neuroscientist with a physics background, currently pursuing his Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Neuroscience at the Champalimaud Foundation in Portugal. As a graduate student, he is part of the Zenith European Training Network, which promotes collaboration across different labs and diversity in the field of neuroscience. Thomas has experience in data science, having worked as a Data Scientist in the Department for Transport (DfT) in the UK, where he prepared insightful analysis and delivered presentations on imports/exports flow across ports during the Covid-19 pandemic. He gained project management skills and implemented an agile project delivery style based on frequent check-ins with his team and clients. He also performed equality monitoring analysis to build a more inclusive and diverse team and delivered analysis to help policy colleagues understand the demand and supply for mobile phone connectivity on the rail network. Before joining Champalimaud Foundation, Thomas worked as a Data Analyst at Cazana, where he designed a dashboard to track Key Performance Indicators (KPI) metrics, created a report generation application to improve internal efficiency, and helped transfer outdated valuation and report code from R to Python. He used Python, R, Github, AWS Cloud, Data Analysis, SQL, Project Management, Data Visualization, and other tools to conduct research and analysis. Thomas's current research focuses on understanding how brain activity gives rise to behavior, using zebrafish as a model organism. He is exploring the escape behavior of zebrafish and understanding the sequence of steps from exposure of predator stimuli to the neural dynamics that give rise to the decision and kinematics. He is applying his skills in computational modeling, biological procedure, electronic hardware implementation, and public communication to this multidisciplinary role. Thomas has a Master of Physics from the University of Manchester and a Bachelor's degree from Mill Hill County High School.
